Last
week, on Wednesday, a man and his wife were tortured by a police officer,
identified as Dada Ogunsanva and
attached to the Ikoyi Police station. The incident happened at the Lekki Roundabout
as Eieh Smith, a 29-year-old photographer and his wife, Grace, 26, were in a taxi
on their way home at Parkview Estate.
A 7-man Police team was patrolling the area around 10
pm and stopped their taxi for a routine check. Ndubuisi Iheaka, the vehicle
driver, opened his boot which contained scaffolding belts and “was about getting the
driving license when he (the policeman) started flashing his torchlight” on his
passengers who were sitting at the back. The wife told the officer not to flash the torch on them since the inner
light of the vehicle was on.
“Because
of what she said, the policeman asked them to come down from the cab. This
started an argument. The next thing I saw was that the policeman pulled my
passenger (Ejeh) by his trousers, and his wife went to plead with him to stop.
But instead, he slapped her and punched her husband. He was wearing a ring,
which inflicted a deep cut on Ejeh’s face. After that, he used the butt of his
gun to hit him in his eye and face. He also dragged his wife on the road” the
taxi driver said. Grace even added that the police officer stepped on her
stomach.
Mrs Aisha Haruna, the Ikoyi Police station DPO, was
said to have arrived at the scene and demanded that the couple accompany her to
the station to give their statements. However, Eieh Smith refused insisting
they needed medical attention – which they did and paid for by themselves.According to Grace’s account, Mrs Aisha Haruna ordered an investigator to delete all the pictures and video she recorded during the incident including personal data. Moreover, the DPO said she would have locked the married couple up if not for their injuries.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, confirmed the incident and “disciplinary procedures” are ongoing.

Mercredi dernier, Dada Ogunsanva,
identifié comme étant un officier de police au commissariat d’Ikoyi, a
gravement blessé un homme et sa femme. L’incident s’est déroulé au rond-point
de Lekki alors qu’un photographe de 29 ans, Eieh Smith et sa femme Grace, âgée
de 26 ans, étaient dans un taxi afin de regagner leur domicile à Parkview
Estate.
Vers 10 heures du matin, une
équipe de policiers faisait sa patrouille dans le secteur de Lekki et a arrêté
le taxi des deux jeunes mariés pour un contrôle de routine. Ndubuisi Iheaka, le
chauffeur de taxi, a ouvert son coffre pour que les policiers puissent attester
de son contenu et alors qu’il allait donner son permis de conduire, Dada
Ogunsanva, a braqué sa lampe torche sur les passagers à l’arrière du véhicule.
La femme a contesté en disant que cela était inutile puisque la lumière
intérieure du taxi était déjà allumée.
Offusqué des propos de la
jeune femme, le policier aurait ordonné aux passagers de descendre du véhicule
ce qui, par la suite, aurait engendré une dispute. Il aurait ensuite tiré le
photographe hors de la voiture malgré les plaintes de la femme, l’implorant
d’arrêter. En guise de réponse, l’officier de police l’aurait frappée et,
portant une bague au doigt, aurait donné un coup de poing au mari, lui infligeant une profonde entaille au
niveau de l’œil. L’officier y serait allé de plus belle en utilisant la crosse
de son fusil pour frapper Eieh à l’œil et au visage et en traînant la jeune
femme au milieu de la route afin de lui piétiner le ventre.
Aisha Haruna, le chef de la police
du commissariat d’Ikoyi, serait arrivée sur les lieux de l’incident et aurait
ordonné au couple de l’accompagner jusqu’à la station de police, pour qu’ils
fassent leur déclaration. Eieh Smith aurait refusé d’aller au commissariat
avant que sa femme et lui aient reçu des soins médicaux – ce qu’ils ont fait
mais pour lesquels ils ont payé.
Selon les dires de Grace
Smith, Mrs Aisha Haruna aurait exigé que toutes les vidéos et photos prises par
la jeune femme durant l’altercation soient supprimées. De plus, elle aurait
exprimé le souhait de les voir sous les barreaux, ce qu’elle aurait fait si les
deux jeunes gens n’avaient pas été blessés.
Le Responsable des Relations Publiques de la Police a confirmé les faits
et des « procédures disciplinaires » sont en cours d’exécution.
