Tension is building up in the upcoming presidential election

Competition for the presidential election due to be held in January 2011 could be fierce.

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar may well be the new candidate of the dominant PDP (People's Democratic Party) likely to compete with Goodluck Jonathan, the current president.

Shehu Garba, the spokesman for Mr Abubakar, has also said that he had "excellent chances" to represent the PDP.

A group of northern Nigerian politicians met to choose a candidate and Abubakar defeated three other contenders, including the military ruler, Ibrahim Babangida.

According to Garba, Ababakar is about to become the new president of Nigeria, after a campaign that, he said, had a broad national apeal.
The People's Democratic Party remains divided between a Muslim North (Abubakar) and a Christian South (Jonathan), Garba remains convinced that the future president must come from the northern part of the country.

La prochaine élection présidentielle s'annonce serrée

La présidentielle de janvier 2011 promet d'être intéressante. En effet, l'ancien vice-président, Atiku Abubakar, pourrait bien être le nouveau candidat du PDP (Parti Démocratique Populaire) majoritaire. Il sera en concurrence avec Goodluck Jonathan, l'actuel président.

Le porte parole de M. Abubakar, Shehu Garba, a déclaré qu'il avait "d'excellentes chances" de représenter le PDP.
Les dirigeants nordistes du parti se sont réunis pour choisir leur futur candidat, et Abubakar a battu trois autres prétendants, dont l’ex président, le militaire Ibrahim Babangida.

D'après Garba, Abubakar deviendra le nouveau président du Nigeria grâce à une campagne qu'il estime avoir soulevé l'enthousiasme dans tout le pays.

Le Parti Démocratique Populaire reste divisé entre les musulmans du Nord (avec Abubakar) et les chrétiens du Sud (avec Jonathan) et Garba reste convaincu que le futur président doit venir du Nord du pays.
