Hostage taking of five foreigners at a Nigeria oil rig

Last Monday, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) took five foreigners hostage at an Afren oil rig which was about to start infill drilling operations on the High Island VII jackup platform.

The attack occurred early in the morning at the Okoro field near Akwa Ibon. Gunmen shot two Indonesians and abducted five other Afren crew members who are said to be two Americans, two French and one Canadian, according to security and company sources.

The reasons for their presence there are still unknown, but the United States has nevertheless asked for the prompt release of all the hostages.

Three French had already been seized in September and Nigerian criminal gangs are used to calling for ransoms after claiming for better distributions of the country’s oil wealth; the hostages are then generally quickly freed.

Prise d'otage de cinq étrangers sur une plate-forme pétrolière au Nigeria

Lundi dernier, le Mouvement pour l’Émancipation du Delta du Niger (MEND) a pris en otage cinq étrangers sur la plate-forme pétrolière High Island VII du groupe Afren qui s’apprêtait à être mise en service.

L’attaque a eu lieu tôt le matin sur le champ d’Okoro, près d’Akwa Ibom. Des hommes armés ont tiré sur deux Indonésiens et enlevé cinq autres employés d’Afren ; il s’agirait de deux Américains, deux Français et un Canadien selon les sources de la sécurité et de la compagnie.

Les raisons de leur présence là-bas demeurent inconnues, mais les Etats-Unis ont néanmoins demandé la libération immédiate de tous les otages.

Trois Français avaient déjà été kidnappés en septembre et les gangs nigérians sont connus pour réclamer des rançons après avoir revendiqué une meilleure redistribution des richesses pétrolières du pays. Les détenus sont alors généralement rapidement relâchés.
