Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, governor of Bayelsa State in Nigeria from 29 May 1999 to 9 december 2005, who was accused of corruption and money laundering, revealed in an interview that the former president Olusegun Obasanjo blackmailed him into changing his relationships with former vice President Atiku Abubakar who wanted to run for president, he said:
“Under the circumstances, I had two options: to be there (in detention) and die in the process, or to accept what they asked me to do to be alive and fight another day”
He also claims that the EFCC (Economic and Financial Crimes Commission) had no convictable case against him, he proves it with unconvincing arguments:
"You remember that former EFCC Chairman, Nuhu Ribadu had gone to the United Nations to say that he had recovered N50 billion from me, gone to the Senate to say that he had recovered N50 billion from me, that I have a refinery, according to them, in Ecuador, even though I have never been to Ecuador in all my life. They also said I bought a £2.5 million wristwatch from the Sultan of Brunei. Where is that wristwatch? Nobody knows.
"The N50 billion Ribadu recovered from me, whether it was stacked in a house and they saw it and used it, how many trailers evacuated it, nobody has asked such question. Where is the money? Nobody is asking. I did not work with the Federal Government, I worked with Bayelsa State, so the money is supposed to have been returned to Bayelsa State, or it is supposed to be in a bank yielding interest in whose account? Nobody is asking these questions."
He blames Obasanjo for telling Britain and the United States that Nigeria could not guarantee free oil flow because of him. According to Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, Obasanjo used all his relationships to prove it to the USA and the UK. He said:
"And America reasoned that 'we cannot afford to have another Saddam Hussein in this world. Because 25 percent of our energy requirement is to come from the Gulf of Guinea by 2015, if there is such a man that will stop us from having oil uninterrupted then waste him.' So, the FBI, CIA, and M16 conspired to assassinate me. Many things happened, and if I had continued in office they would have got me.”
“There was a plan to put drugs and explosives in my bag on my way to Britain, using the British Airways. Every movement was monitored. But God was with me, because I changed my mind when I got to the airport and bought Emirates Airlines tickets.”

Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, gouverneur de l’état de Bayelsa au Nigeria du 29 mai 1999 au 9 décembre 2005, accusé de corruption et de blanchissement d’argent, révèle dans un interview la façon dont le chantage du président Olusegun Obasanjo pour que Alamieyeseigha se place de son côte et non du côte du Vice-Président Atiku Abubakar candidat aux présidentielles. Selon lui :« Dans ces circonstances, j’avais deux options : être placé en détention et risquer de mourir, ou accepter ce qu’ils m’avaient demandé de faire, pour vivre et me battre plus tard »
D’après lui, l’EFCC (Economic and Financial Crimes Commission) n’avait aucune preuve accablante de ces faits, ses arguments semblent cependant peu convaincants :
«Vous rappelez-vous que Nuhu Ribadu, l’ex-directeur de l’EFCC, a été aux Nations Unies pour annoncer qu’il avait redécouvert N50 milliards (N pour Naira monnaie du Nigeria) chez moi et une raffinerie en Equateur, même si de toute ma vie je ne suis jamais allé en Equateur. Ils ont aussi dit que j’avais acheté une montre de 2.5 millions de livres sterling au Sultan de Brunei. Où est cette montre? Personne ne le sait.»
« Les N50 milliards que Ribadu a récupérés ont peut être été cachés quelque part, distribués et utilisés, combien de camions les ont évacués, personne ne se pose de telles questions. Où est l’argent ? Personne ne se le demande. Je ne travaillais pas avec le gouvernement fédéral mais avec l’état de Bayelsa, l’argent aurait dû retourner à Bayelsa ou est-il mieux dans une banque, donnant intérêt à qui ? Personne ne se le demande ».
Il accuse Obasanjo d’avoir dit aux Britanniques et aux Américains que le Nigeria ne pouvait pas garantir la liberté des échanges pétroliers à cause de lui. D’après Alamieyeseigha, Obasanjo a utilisé toutes ses relations pour le calomnier auprès des deux autres pays: «Et l’Amérique a raisonné ainsi : nous ne pouvons pas supporter un autre Saddam Hussein dans ce monde. Parce que 25% de nos besoins en énergie proviendront du Golfe de Guinée en 2015, si quelqu’un menace de faire obstacle aux échanges pétroliers, il faut l’éliminer. Alors le FBI, la CIA et le M16 ont conspiré pour m’assassiner. Beaucoup de choses se sont passées, et si j’étais resté en fonction, ils m’auraient eu.»
« Il y a eu un plan qui consistait à mettre de le drogue et des explosifs dans mon sac pendant un voyage en Angleterre, avec British Airways. Tous mes déplacements étaient surveillés. Mais Dieu devait être avec moi puisque j’ai changé d’avis en arrivant à l’aéroport et j’ai acheté des billets sur Emirates Airlines. »
