Militants hijack a ship

Wednesday, 19 November

Sunday, November 16, a ship conveying equipment for the Escravos Gas-to-Liquid project from Singapore was hijacked by militants operating in the creeks of Delta State. They held its crew hostage at their den in the creeks of Warri.

The number of the crew members could not be ascertained.

The project was initiated by the American company Chevron Nigeria Limited, to end gas flaring in the country's oil industry.

No reason has been given for the action, but a source in the Joint Task Force in the NigerDelta told that the militaints wanted to secure the release of vessel, MT AKUADA, arrested for alleged illegal oil bunkering in Friday.

The security operatives claimed that MT AKUADA was carrying 12,500 metric tonnes of stolen crude as at the time of its arrest.

The Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, moved into Warri on Sunday evening to review the security situation in the state with the service commanders of the security agencies.
