There was a festive mood recently in the ancient Benin
Kingdom and the entire Edo State as Eheneden Erediauwa became the
new Oba of Benin, succeeding his late father, Omo n’Oba n’Edo Uku Akpolopkolo.
The Beninese Oba used to rule the old kingdom the Togo
and the old Nigeria were a part of this kingdom which was annexed by the
British in 1877
He graduated from the best British and American schools and is a
former Nigerian ambassador to Sweden and Angola.
The new king is determined to revive the former glory of his kingdom
and the economy.
In particular he promised to invest in the bronze industry which is the
kingdom’s pride and also hopes to attract tourists.
As part of the traditional crowing ritual, Prince Erediauwa
performed a 10km trek from his palace in Uselu through Benin-Lagos Road. He
also climbed a 500-year-old palm tree.

Nouveau roi au Bénin
L’ambiance était festive récemment dans l’ancien royaume du Benin
et dans tout l’état d’Edo pour le couronnement de Eheneden Erediauwa qui
succède à son grand père Omo n’Oba n’Edo Uku Akpolopkolo.
L’Oba dirigeait l’ancien royaume du Benin qui comprenait le
Togo, le Benin et une partie de l’actuel Nigéria. L’ancien royaume du Benin a
été annexé par les Britanniques en 1897.
Mr. Erediauwa est diplômé des meilleures universités britanniques
et américaines, il a été ambassadeur du Nigéria en Suède et en Angola.
Le nouveau roi est déterminé à restaurer la gloire de son
royaume et à développer l’économie.
Il a promis en particulier de développer l’artisanat du
bronze, symbole du royaume. Et il espère attirer les touristes.
Lors de la cérémonie du couronnement les traditions ont été respectées.
Le Prince Erediauwa a fait un trek de 10 kilomètres de son palais de Uselu
jusqu'à Benin-Lagos. Il a aussi gravi un palmier vieux de 500 ans.
