Court orders Shiite leader’s release

After bloody clashes between Nigerian army, Ibrahim Zakzaky and his wife were arrested on December 2015 in Zaria in the north.


The leader of the Shiite group, the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, Ibrahim Zakzaky even lost an eye and was partially paralyzed.


Last Friday, a court ordered the release of Ibrahim and his wife. They had been detained for one year without trial by the Department of State Services (DSS).


The leader of the Shiite group filed a lawsuit against the Police, the DSS and the Department of Justice in the Federal High Court to protest this "unlawful detention". He claims 2 billion of Nairas (6 million euros) in compensation.






Judge Gabriel Kolawole ruled in his favor and ordered the applicant be released within 45 days and with the Ministry of Justice providing housing to the plaintiff and his family upon release. The religious leader and his wife obtained 74,000 Euros in damages for being detained illegally.


The Shiites form a small minority in Nigeria within the Muslim community, essentially Sunni, who constitute half of the population.






In December 2015, the army killed 348 Shiite Muslims in Zaria then buried them in a mass grave, without anyone in the army having been tried or condemned to this day.

Le leader du groupe islamiste chiite Ibrahim Zakzaky a même perdu un œil et est resté partiellement paralysé.


Ce vendredi, un tribunal a ordonné la libération d’Ibrahim et de sa femme. Ils étaient détenus depuis un an sans jugement par le Département des Services d’Etat (DSS).


Le leader du groupe chiite avait intenté un procès contre la police, la DSS et le ministère de la Justice devant la Haute Cour fédérale pour protester contre cette détention illégale.


Il réclame 2 milliards de Nairas (6 millions d’euros) de dédommagement.






Le juge Gabriel Kolawole a tranché en sa faveur et a ordonné que le requérant soit libéré dans un délai de 45 jours, charge au ministère de la Justice de fournir un logement au plaignant et à sa famille à leur libération.


Le leader religieux et sa femme se sont vu accorder 74.000 euros en compensation de leur détention illégale.


Les chiites forment une petite minorité au sein de la communauté musulmane, essentiellement sunnite, qui constitue la moitié de la population.






En décembre 2015, l’armée avait tué 348 musulmans chiites à Zaria et les avait ensuite enterrés dans une fosse commune sans que personne dans l'armée n'ait à ce jour été jugé.
