Depuis quelques années un projet est né au Nigéria, celui de créer le musée The Emowaa qui retracera l’histoire de la ville de Bénin située dans l’État d’Edo. Pillée par les anglais en 1879, de nombreux objets de toutes sortes (statuettes, masques, bijoux en bronze ...) ont été volés et sont la propriété de musées occidentaux dont le British Museum qui en détient 900 pièces.

Ce dernier est le principal auteur de la donation au Nigéria. Certaines pièces seront rendues de manière définitive tandis que d’autres seront prêtées de façon temporaire.

L’architecte en charge du projet, David Adjaye, affirme que cela entrainera une véritable « renaissance de la culture africaine dans la région » et des fouilles qui dureront de quatre à cinq ans seront bientôt lancées dans la ville de Benin City.

Cette restitution n’a pas seulement vocation à reconstituer la ville de Bénin mais également un acte politique, réaffirmant l’indépendance du Nigéria.



Homecoming at the Benin Museum

A few years ago, Nigeria saw the creation of the Emowaa museum where the story of the city of Benin, situated in the Edo state, will be related.

Looted by the English in 1879, a lot of items (masks, statuettes, bronze jewellery…) were stolen and exhibited in different western museums, particularly the British Museum where 900 different items are on display.

This museum is the main actor of the donation to Nigeria. Some exhibits will be given back permanently, and the others will be lent temporally.

David Adjaye, the architect in charge of this project says that it will lead to “the rebirth of the African culture” in the area and that excavations which will last of five years should start in Benin-city quite soon.

This restitution doesn’t only aim at relating the history of Benin, but it is also a political step to re-assert the independence of Nigeria.
