One British hostage dies, three others released



On October 13, four British charity workers were taken hostage by a rebel group.

They were kidnapped near the city of Warri in the south of the country in the town of Enukorowa.

They worked for a local medical centre and helped the population to have free access to health care. They were also committed to religious activities.

On November 6, three of the four hostages were released. A military squad carried out a rescue mission. Alanna Carlson, David Donovan and Shirley Donovan recovered their freedom despite severe trauma. Unfortunately, the fourth hostage Ian squire, a charity optician, was killed by a hostage taker.

Nigeria is the fourth country in terms of hostage taking in the world.

Depuis le 13 octobre, quatre membres d’une ONG étaient retenus en otage par un groupe rebelle.

Ils avaient été enlevés dans le sud du Nigeria, près de la ville de Warri dans le village d’Enukorowa.

Les quatre otages travaillaient dans un centre médical caritatif et aidaient la population locale à recevoir des soins gratuits. Ils étaient aussi engagés dans des activités religieuses.

Le 6 novembre, trois des quatre otages ont été libérés. Un détachement de l’armée a mené une opération de sauvetage. Alanna Carlson, David Donovan et Shirley Donovan ont recouvré leur liberté malgré un gros traumatisme. Malheureusement, le quatrième otage Ian squire, ophtalmologue bénévole a été tué par ses ravisseurs.

La cause de cet enlèvement reste inconnue.

Le Nigeria est le quatrième pays avec le plus de prises d’otages au monde.
