A major blow for Boko Haram?


On May 12th 2012, the police claimed they had arrested Suleiman Mohammed, a leader of the Islamist militant group Boko Haram. Boko Haram is the most feared terrorist group.

It is said that the man was with his wife and his children in a hideout when he was arrested. This is a great success for the Nigerian police who also found explosives, ammunition and guns. The suspect has been brought to Abuja, the capital, for questioning. Despite this important arrest, the police weren’t able to verify whether or not Suleiman Mohammed is indeed a key figure of Boko Haram. If this is the case, Nigerian police could hope to extirpate much information from him which would be necessary in order to stop this group.

My opinion:

Boko Haram members are the main responsible of the religious conflicts that shake the country. This arrest heralds some progress but isn’t enough yet. The government has to act quickly so as to avoid a religious war.

Le 12 mai 2012, la police a affirmé avoir arrêté Suleiman Mohammed, un des dirigeants du groupe terroriste islamiste Boko Haram. D’après les sources policières, l’homme était caché en compagnie de sa femme et de ses enfants au moment de son arrestation. La police a également trouvé des explosifs, des munitions et des armes dans la cachette de l’individu. Le suspect a été emmené à Abuja, la capitale afin d’être interrogé.

Malgré cette arrestation importante, la police n’a pas pu vérifier si oui ou non Suleiman Mohammed était réellement un des leaders de Boko Haram. Si il s’avérait qu’il occupe une place importante au sein du groupe, la police pourrait espérer obtenir des informations importantes, ce qui serait nécessaire pour mettre un terme aux agissements de Boko Haram.

Mon opinion :

Cette arrestation est le signe que les autorités ont commencé à agir et marque un progrès mais ce n’est pas encore assez. Le gouvernement nigérian se doit d’agir, et vite s’il veut éviter une guerre de religion.
