Nigerian economic growth begins to falter



Yesterday the Nigerian government announced that the national economic growth has declined in the first quarter of 2018.

Indeed, the economy grew by 1.95 % which is less than the 2.11% in the last quarter of 2017. This is the first time since the country climbed out of recession in January 2017 that the Nigerian economy slows down.

The economic situation of Nigeria is highly volatile particularly because it is only focused on oil. About 70 % of the National income comes from selling oil. Despite an government effort to help the non-oil sector, the latter increased by only 0.76 % between January and March 2018 while the oil sector increased by 14.77 %.

This casts a light on the unstable economic situation of Nigeria and its addiction to oil. The situation is not about to change; last week, Nigerian Parliament voted for a record budget of $30 billion for the oil-sector.

L’heure est au bilan, hier le gouvernement nigérian a annoncé que la croissance économique avait baissé durant le premier trimestre 2018.

En effet, l’économie a cru de 1,95 % ce qui est inférieur à l’augmentation de 2,11 % au dernier trimestre 2017. C’est la première fois depuis que le pays est sorti de sa période de récession en janvier 2017 que l’économie ralentit.

La situation économique du Nigéria est très instable notamment parce qu’elle n’est axée que sur le pétrole, sans réelle diversité. Environ 70 % des recettes nationales proviennent de la vente de pétrole.

Malgré un effort du gouvernement qui aide le secteur non pétrolier à décoller, celui-ci n’a progressé que de 0,76% entre janvier et mars 2018 tandis que le secteur pétrolier progressait de 14,77 % à la même période. Cela met en avant l’instabilité de la situation économique au Nigéria et sa dépendance au pétrole. La situation n’est pas près de changer ; la semaine dernière le parlement a voté un budget record de 30 milliards de dollars pour le secteur pétrolier.

Re-election bid for ageing Buhari

The on-going president Muhammadu Buhari is seeking re-election in 2019.

He was elected for the first time in 2015 at 72 years old. His political party the All Progressives Congress (APC), was formed 2 years before the 2015 elections to evict former president Goodluck Jonathan. This was the first time for Nigeria that an opposition political party had taken power peacefully through elections.

Buhari, now 75 years old, only announced this week his plans for re-election

next year. He spent most of his first term in the UK, actually taking care of his poor health while claiming to be on an official visit.

When he came back to Nigeria, he immediately revealed his ill-health, omitting to mention the diagnosis.

He will run under the banner of the All Progressives Congress, ignoring the pressure of other personalities like former president Olusegun Obasanjo who has advised against his re-election due to his age.

Even if Nigeria has made some progress under his mandate, his health and his age will be a liability for his bid.

Muhammadu Buhari, l’actuel président du Nigeria a annoncé vouloir se présenter aux élections présidentielles de 2019.

Il a été élu pour la première fois en 2015 à l’âge de 72 ans. Son parti politique est le All Progressives Congress formé en 2013, deux ans avant l’élection afin de faire barrage au président sortant Goodluck Jonathan.

Cette élection fut la première au Nigeria où l’opposition prenait le pouvoir pacifiquement.

Buhari aujourd’hui âgé de 75 ans a annoncé son intention de se présenter de nouveau seulement cette semaine.

En effet, il a passé la majeure partie de son premier mandat au Royaume-Uni où il se soignait en prétendant une visite officielle. Lorsqu’il est revenu au Nigeria, il a immédiatement révélé sa maladie omettant de mentionner le véritable diagnostic.

Il se présentera en faisant abstraction d’un flot de critiques émanant de personnalités politiques majeures comme l’ancien président Olusegun Obasanjo, qui appelle à ne pas le réélire en raison de son âge.

Même si le Nigeria a connu quelque progrès notamment dans la lutte contre Boko Haram sous son mandat, sa mauvaise santé et son âge avancé ne joueront pas en sa faveur.

DOUBLE SUICIDE BOMBING IN MUBI KILLS AT LEAST 24 PEOPLE



Today, May 1, in the afternoon, a double bomb attack killed at least 24 people in a mosque in

Mubi. The faithful were inside the mosque at 1 p.m. for the afternoon prayer. Just a few moments after it began, a suicide bomber blew himself up inside the mosque. Then, a second suicide bomber who was waiting in a market blew himself up too and killed the survivors. The attack was well organized. The kamikazes have not been identified and Boko Haram hasn’t claimed the attack yet, but they launched a similar attack in Mubi in November. It’s just a matter of time before it is known for sure that the Islamist group was behind these explosions.

The government sources said that there were at least 24 dead but in fact, the actual death toll should be around 60 according to the eyewitnesses and hospital sources. Monday, president Muhammad Buhari met Donald Trump in the White House to sign a contract for 12 new fighter planes.





UN DOUBLE ATTENTAT À LA BOMBE À MUBI A CAUSÉ LA MORT D’AU MOINS 24 PERSONNES



Aujourd’hui 1er mai, dans l’après-midi, un double attentat à la bombe a fait au moins 24 morts dans une mosquée à Mubi. Les fidèles étaient à l’intérieur de la mosquée à 13 heures pour la prière de l’après-midi. Quelques instants après le début de celle-ci, un kamikaze s’est fait exploser à l’intérieur.

Après cette explosion, un second kamikaze, qui attendait dans un marché, s’est lui aussi fait exploser et a tué les quelques survivants. L’attaque avait été planifié. L’identité des deux kamikazes reste inconnue.

Boko-Haram n’a pas encore revendiqué cet attentat, mais ils en avaient commis un similaire à Mubi en novembre. Ce n’est qu’une question de temps avant que l’on soit sûr que l’organisation islamiste était derrière ces explosions.

Les sources gouvernementales ont affirmé que qu’il y avait au moins 24 morts mais le vrai bilan devrait s’établir aux alentours de 60 selon les témoins et les sources médicales.

Lundi, le président Muhammad Buhari a rencontré Donald Trump à la Maison Blanche pour signer un contrat d’achat de 12 nouveaux avions de chasse.

Civilians killed in Maiduguri attack

On April 1st, suspected Boko Haram militants attacked Maidaguri, the big city of Borno, northeast of the country. Gunmen, mortars, suicide bombers were used to attack a military base and two villages: Bale Shuware and Alikaranti. More than 86 villagers were wounded when they tried to escape and around 18 people were killed.

The Nigerian soldiers neutralized some suicide bombers, killed six insurgents and repelled the militants who were on their way to attacking the military base. Because they couldn’t reach their first target, they decided to attack the two villages, according to Col Onyema Nwachukwu, the Nigeria army spokesman.

The group has killed more than 20,000 people it’s the deadliest attack since the government announced they are holding talks with the Islamist militants.



Des civils meurent au cours d’une attaque à Maidaguri.

Le 1er avril, des militants soupçonnés d’appartenir au groupe islamiste Boko Haram ont attaqué la grande ville de Maiduguri dans l’état du Borno, au nord-est du pays.

Des hommes armés, des mortiers et des kamikazes ont attaqué une base militaire et 2 villages : Bale Shuware et Alikaranti. Plus de 86 villageois ont été blessés alors qu’ils tentaient de s’enfuir et 18 personnes ont été tuées dont un soldat.

Les militaires ont neutralisé plusieurs kamikazes, tué six rebelles et repoussé les militants qui tentaient d’attaquer leur base. N’ayant pas pu atteindre leur cible, ils ont alors attaqué les villages selon le porte-parole de l’armée, le Colonel Onyema Nwachukwu.

Depuis 2009, le groupe a tué plus de 20.000 personnes et c’est pourquoi le gouvernement est en pourparlers avec les militants islamistes. C’est l’attaque la plus meurtrière depuis le début officiel des négociations.
