Kano school in mourning



Last Thursday, Gunmen attacked a military-run secondary school near Kano, in northern Nigeria
The victims were part of the school.
"Thursday night, six air force personnel arrived with gunshot wounds following the incident, three died on admission and another one succumbed later.", according to a local doctor.
A farmer declared the shooting lasted 30 minutes.
Northern Nigeria has been sustaining violence from Islamist supporters but Kano has not been targeted recently.
Air commodore Sani Ahmed blamed the assault on armed thieves given that some items had been stolen.
Some residents put the blame on Boko Haram, responsible of a wave of bombings and killings in recent years.
Boko Haram - literally “western education isforbidden”- often target security forces.
For example in August, it has been blamed for a bomb attack at the UN headquarters in Abuja, the Nigeria's capital, killing 23 persons.

Jeudi dernier, des hommes armés ont attaqué une école militaire près de Kano, dans le nord du Nigeria. Les victimes faisaient partie de l'école.
"Jeudi soir, six étudiants blessés par balle ont été amenés, trois sont décédés à l'admission et un autre a succombé un peu plus tard à ses blessures.", a expliqué un médecin.
Un agriculteur de la région a déclaré que les coups de feu avaient duré une demi-heure.
Le nord du Nigeria a souvent subi des attaques de la part des partisans islamistes, mais Kano n'avait pas été pris pour cible récemment.
Le commandant de l'air Sani Ahmed soupçonne un vol à main armée sachant que certains objets ont disparu.
Malgré l'absence de preuve, certaines personnes accusent la secte Boko Haram, qui est le principal responsable d'une vague d'attentats et de meurtres ces dernières années.
Boko Haram, qui signifie « l'éducation occidentale est interdite », vise souvent les forces de sécurité. Par exemple, en août dernier, il a été accusé d'un attentat, qui a fait 23 morts, au siège des Nations Unies à Abuja, la capitale.

14 Boko Haram militants arrested in Kano

On December, 19th 2011, Muhammed Hamza Aliyu, suspected to be one of the leaders of Islamist militant group Boko Haram and 13 other militants of the group were arrested as they were fleeing the northern city of Kano following a shootout in this city. Police claimed that they were held during an exchange of fire outside the residence of Mr. Aliyu, when they were trying to run away. The police also seized explosives.
According to Mr. Ibrahim Idris, the Kano state police chief, three police officers and four militants were killed during the gun battle.
According to Mr. Idris, on Saturday, the day of the incident, Mr. Aliyu suspected that his house was under surveillance and called in members of the militant group in order to attack the police, resulting in the shootout. Later, the police discovered that his car was filled with weapons and ammunition suspected to have been stolen from recent attacks on police stations and that his house contained bomb-making materials.
It’s a big catch for Kano’s police officers as Boko Haram is responsible for numerous attacks in northern and central Nigeria, including a bomb attack in August at the UN headquarters in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja which killed 23 people.
Recently, Boko Haram has been active in Kano with a number of attacks in particular on Thursday night and on Saturday, the day of the arrests. Indeed, on Thursday night, people suspected to be members of the group attacked a military secondary school, near the city causing four casualties, who were air force officers, hospital sources said.
Boko Haram is a very dangerous group of terrorists who have been blamed for scores of shooting and bombings in the north, including a spate of attacks last week in Kano. However, their principal target stays Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state.

14 militants de Boko Haram arrêtés à Kano après une fusillade

Le 19 décembre 2011, Muhammed Hamza Aliyu, soupçonné d’être l’un des dirigeants de la secte islamiste Boko Haram, ainsi que 13 autres militants du groupe ont été arrêtés après une fusillade en pleine ville, à l’extérieur de la résidence de Mr. Aliyu alors qu’ils tentaient de fuir celle-ci. La police a également saisi des explosifs.
Selon Mr. Ibrahim Idris, le chef de la police de l’état de Kano, 3 officiers et 4 militants ont perdu la vie au cours de la fusillade.
D’après Mr. Idris, samedi, le jour de l’incident, Mr. Aliyu ne trouvait pas sa maison assez surveillée et a appelé des membres du groupe pour attaquer la police, l’affaire s’est malheureusement terminée en bataille rangée. Par la suite, la police a découvert que la voiture de Mr. Aliyu regorgeait d’armes et de munitions qui auraient été volées durant des attaques visant des stations se police.
La police a également découvert que sa maison contenait du matériel servant à fabriquer des bombes.
C’est une grosse prise pour les officiers de police de Kano, car Boko Haram est responsable de nombreuses attaques au Nord et au Centre du Nigéria, comme l’attentat au siège de de l’ONU à Abuja en août qui avait coûté la vie à 23 personnes.
Ces derniers temps, Boko Haram s’est montrée très active à Kano avec de nombreuse attaques, notamment jeudi nuit et samedi, le jour des arrestations. En effet, jeudi nuit des personnes soupçonnées d’appartenir au groupe ont attaqué une école militaire secondaire, près de la ville, tuant 4 élèves officiers de l’armée de l’air.
Boko Haram est un groupe terroriste très dangereux à qui l’on attribue de nombreuses attaques à main armée ainsi que des attentats dans le Nord, y compris une vague d’attentats la semaine dernière à Kano. Néanmoins, leur cible principale reste Maiduguri, la capitale de l’Etat de Borno.
